When government becomes the mommy, what happens to the parents?

Senators stage a publicity stunt "for the children"

This article is bouncing all around the libertarian blogs.

At a news conference on Capitol Hill, New York Democrat Clinton said legal restraints should be imposed to keep inappropriate video games from children, in the same way laws protect children from tobacco, alcohol and pornography.

In some video games, characters routinely spray each other with machine gun fire, drive over pedestrians and kill police officers, Clinton said, saying it is all too easy for minors to buy such games.

"These video games are stealing the innocence of our children," said Clinton. "Our bill puts teeth into the standards set by the industry."

Clinton introduced the bill along with Democratic senators Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut and Evan Bayh of Indiana. They did not discuss prospects for advancing the legislation, but said they expected to attract some Republican co-sponsors.

Who decides what is inappropriate?

Should I trot out the list of books that have been called "inappropriate" over the years?

I still remember some of the fuss about Huckleberry Finn because of the "n" word. Yet I have to wonder how many people actually sat down and read that book. It is the story of a boy becoming a man by helping an escaped slave to freedom, against everything that he has been told is right. He comes to some realizations about himself and society at the same time.

What about films? One of the biggest surprises was The Passion of the Christ, which depicts torture, mutilation, and execution in exquisite detail. The film has a meaning for many Christians, but under the standards of the proposed bill, it couldn't be shown to children.

What happened to parents deciding what was right for their children and when?

Once a government agency start's deciding what is "appropriate," people lose the ability to make that choice for themselves.
