Lost Freedom Day

An anniversary you shouldn't forget

On Feburary 3, 1913, the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified, authorizing income taxes. Income taxes had been tried before during the Civil War, but had been ruled unconstitutional.

Many small l libertarians date vast the expansion of Federal power from that day in 1913. Some go back further to the Civil War. But regardless, that day in 1913 was one that cost more liberty than almost any other. That Amendment led to the Internal Revenue Service and laws requiring banks and other institutions to report your financial transactions to the government.

My take is a little simpler.

On that day, Americans lost the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. It started with taxes and moved to other things slowly and surely.
