VeriChip wants to implant RFID chips into U.S. servicemen

The cost of technology

This looks more and more like an experiment to pave the way for implanting RFID chips in the general population.

Despite some pretty significant security concerns, everyone's favorite futurific company VeriChip is looking to get its chips under the skin of the largest group of people yet: the entire US military. According to the DC Examiner, the company is lobbying the Pentagon to choose its RFID tags as a replacement for the famous metal dog tags, making information like a person's name and complete medical record instantly available with the swipe of an RFID reader. Needless to say, not everyone's sold on the idea, with veterns' groups and some members of Congress already raising concerns.

Let's see. Put a chip that responds to a broadcast signal into every soldier. This is a really, really bad idea.

What happens if you attach the RFID sensor to a mine? Why post guards when you can put electronics out there to tell you when the troops are arriving? A complete medical history means that you have just given that serviceman's captors vital information necessary for torture.

And who is going to keep all that personal information secure?
