Practical defense

US Law recognizes State Militias and specifically exempts them from being called up to serve in the military.

Hmmm.

I had no idea.

Turns out that States are authorized to have State Defense Forces that operate under the sole authority of each State Government, although they are regulated under the National Guard Bureau. There are some important but limited exceptions under which they can Federalized.

By law, they are not Federal and can't operate beyond the borders of the State that commands them.

Since they are not Federal, they don't get any Federal funds.

Yet.

Homeland Security may yet rear it's ugly head.

So if provision for these units exist, I can only assume that the States tolerate the National Guard to get the money and goodies.

I didn't know about this one. My only excuse is that Arizona only has National Guard units.

I am going to have to do some thinking about this one.

It has... possibilities.
