Kwanzaa

La Shawn Barber takes on the holiday

As long as I am going to be non-PC today, I am going all out.

Kwanzaa.

I don't object to the idea. I certainly think that modern America could do with more ritual. And you could do a lot worse.

No, my objection is when Kwanzaa is passed off as something it is not. It's not ancient, and it's not "African." Do you know how many cultures are in Africa?

Kwanzaa is American, it has a questionable past, and at times it looks more like a political movement than anything else.

That doesn't mean that Kwanzaa has no merit. It just means people need to recognize where it came from before they decide where it is going.

Something similar happened with some Pagan faiths a decade or so ago. How someone chooses to celebrate and honor the ideals is more important than the lineage and history.
