Arnold Schwarzenegger on MLK day

Anger in San Francisco

Think about this one for a bit.

Local labor leaders are fuming over Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's last-minute appearance at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast in San Francisco -- and a lot of their anger is directed at former Mayor Willie Brown.

"We've spent a year and a half, and millions of dollars fighting this SOB,'' San Francisco Labor Council head Tim Paulson said of the governor. "For him to come to this breakfast was an absolute insult."

Paulson also had a few words for Brown, the lawyer/lobbyist and talk-show pundit (he regularly appears on TV with this column's Phil Matier) who helped engineer Arnold's well-covered appearance.

"Willie was pimping him in front of us,'' Paulson said. "Willie has gone over to the other side."

The governor's last-minute invite to Monday's event at the Golden Gateway Holiday Inn set off a boatload of behind-the-scenes fireworks, some of which are still exploding.

So apparently you aren't allowed honor Martin Luther King, Jr. unless you are a Democrat?

This is the thing that annoys me about some progressives and liberals. They wrap themselves in their pet causes so much that they actively attack anyone who doesn't share their politics, even if that anyone also honors the cause.

Sanctimonious compassion is far worse than the compassionate conservatism because it excludes anyone who doesn't have the right politics.
