Windfall profits? Hardly. Congressional power grab.

Illinois Senator blaming oil companies

Oil companies are easy targets. That is the only excuse.

Are any Congressmen suggesting "windfall profit" taxes on anything else?

What qualifies Congress to set a permanent baseline price of a commodity?

What happens when the market price exceeds the baseline price?

What happens when the other expenses drive the price of gasoline up?

Just as one example, without profits, there is nothing to bankroll building more refinery capacity.

And of course, the last time Congress tried to set gasoline prices, gas shortage resulted.

This is a tried and true method that the Congressman is pulling out. Blame "the rich" for a temporary condition, act shocked when the "solution" makes the "problem" worse, and then demand further control for the "duration of the emergency."

Don't fall for it.
