Congress to States - "It's gonna cost ya!"

Some PRELIMINARY estimates of the hidden costs of the Real ID program

Real ID is shaping up to be another unfounded mandate.

In an apparent fit of wishful thinking, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that Real ID will cost states about $100 million (some of which will be covered by grants). But Zenk says Washington state alone is looking at $250 million in expenses over the next five years. "We don't have the funds allocated to us to implement this," says Zenk, citing the costs of the equipment and personnel required to scan and verify documents.

Remember, there are some serious security issues. Once the information is in the system, I promise you that it will be for sale. Repeatedly.

Hat tip to Real ID Rebellion.
