Blackberry outage

Reports are mixed on how extensive it was

Back in January of 2006, I was thinking of getting a Blackberry. One of the things that bothered me then was the reliance on a central server operated by the same company that manufactured the Blackberry.

Looks like I was right to be concerned.

Research in Motion, the Canadian company that provides the devices and e-mail service, said the interruption affected users in North America. RIM said the cause of the problems was still under review, but that service for most customers was restored overnight.

Online news reports cited message boards that claimed the outage began at 8:15 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

Apparently it just was the messages and push mail that was affected, but even so.

Never put all your eggs in one basket.
