Jeff Hawkins ready to unwrap

Could this be the major new product line that Palm desperately needs?

Earlier this month I talked about the Smartphone Melee that I see shaping up for this summer and beyond, At that point Palm hadn't announced a new product, but I was willing to give them a chance because rumor had it that Jeff Hawkins was working on something. Well, he's going to announce something on Wednesday.

After years of hints, veiled references and rampant speculation, the fruits of Jeff Hawkin's secret project are expected to be revealed next week. Hawkin's is scheduled to present at the Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital next Wednesday in Southern California.

Hawkins himself has hinted earlier this year that Palm fans "should keep a close watch on" what he reveals during the elite technology industry conference. Numerous theories abound as to exactly what we will see, but a number of recent hints from Palm executives and a look back at some of Hawkin's quotes provide some rough clues. In this article we take a look back at all the events leading up to the announcement and try to piece together a preview of what to expect.

Jeff Hawkins founded Palm and was the chief engineer and designer. He's also absolutely brilliant and I think he may have something.

At the same conference, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates will be sharing a stage. Could be interesting.

I still want to see what the iPhone will do, especially outside of AT&T's coverage area. It still doesn't have enough storage for my tastes, I want at least as much as my current iPod. But it is still shaping up to be a killer product.

Palm, RIM (Blackberry), and Apple.

Whoever wins, the consumer gets the goodies.
