Pajamas Media

The future doesn't look bright for this cooperative.

Over the weekend you may have noticed that I had added Open Source Media to my blogroll. They have since been removed.

Open Source Media used to be know as Pajamas Media. I thought that the project had great potential. Long story short, I find the name-theft thing a big problem especially for people who are supposed to be internet-savy, their content doesn't update fast enough, and can't be used without permission.

I know, considering my own record at updating, that is saying a lot.

I think they do have a problem though.

With my one-man operation, I can update a couple of times a day as long as life doesn't interfere. All I need is the time to scan news stories and the awareness to comment on it. With their system, there is too much between the reader and the source. Now that works if you are a major press operation and you can impose deadlines. But it certainly won't work with a bunch of bloggers each with their own schedules and priorities. The more steps that the former Pajamas Media puts between the immediate content and the readers, the more it will become yesterday's news. They would be better off tracking the blogosphere and linking to the hot stories as fast as they are published on the internet. I for one would be willing to pay a modest listing fee if I knew I had a chance to drive more readers to my site.

Even if it was just a chance, I would work so that my commentary could be listed. I would change my style if there were guidelines. But as it is, it is beginning to smell like a dead horse stuck in the stream.

As it is though, it looks like a lot of people are going to lose money. I can't see what they offer that other services on the web don't do better.

And if you are interested, some bloggers really attack the new project.
