Censoring cartoons


Are they really doing kids a favor?

While I don't approve of smoking in cartoons, I certainly don't approve of censorship.

Most of these cartoons were made in an era where smoking was considered very sophisticated.

I think it is another example of the Huckleberry Finn problem. Someone looks at one small bit or phrase in a story without looking at the whole context.

Granted, I haven't done an exhaustive research project, but as I recall, when there was smoking, it was usually either Tom or a guest villain. They usually ended up humbled by the end of the cartoon, too.

If you have to impose your morality by force of law, that doesn't say much for your morality.
