Poser revealed at Wikipedia - UPDATED

It may not have much impact on the overall content, but I will be a tad more careful using Wikipedia from now on

I keep an extensive list of websites for specialized research. Sometimes it is just one I ran across when wondering the web, other times it's something that has been useful for research in the past. For general research, my first choice is Google and my second choice is Wikipedia.

That is why this worries me. Not the article, but the editor's note at the end.

There are always going to be people pretending to be something that they are not. I've run into that all over the net. But the telling bit is that the young man got away with it. He didn't have to face the consequences of his actions. He still has some pretty potent privileges at Wikipedia.

I still believe the the Wikipedia model is a valid one. Although there may not be an objective measure for "truth," it's fairly easy to tell when something works and when something doesn't. It's never going to be perfectly accurate, but as more information is entered and cross referenced, what works will tend to displace what doesn't. For all the frauds and imposters, there are many more who do know what they are talking about and are passionate about it.

Hat tip Blog World Expo Blog.

Update - I forgot to mention that I use Google and Wikipedia as starting elements, not as research in and of themselves.
