Pakistan free to chooseBetter than you think
I wanted to hold off commenting on Pakistan until
I was pretty sure I was reading it
right.
I think I am. The signs are very encouraging. In the past, American foreign policy would have meant supporting "our guy" no matter what. Instead, we've turned up the pressure for the rule of law and the right to choose. But most of the pressure has come from inside the country, without violence. Yes, Musharraf is facing challenges, not the least of which are the border Kurds. A decade or so ago, this would have led to more repression. Instead, it looks like liberty is taking root. WITHOUT American politicos and bureaucrats stage-managing.
