NeoNotes — American Christmas

This was posted on a comment thread at the Bookworm Room in response to this Prager University video. Unlike many PragerU videos, I don't agree with much of the premise. That's why I haven't posted the video here.

I'm a person of faith, just not one of the Big Three Monotheisms.

I've no issue with Christianity unless it's the "default" state or the 'desired result." Long story short, Christians are nicer people when they aren't the only game in town. Competition works in more than just commerce.

I do object to Christmas as a "national holiday." I firmly believe faith is personal and government has no place in the relationship between you and the Divine. I would no more expect a Christian to celebrate Midsummer than I would celebrate Easter. Personally I think Easter makes more sense to the message of Christianity, but there's been Midwinter and Midsummer holidays for longer than there has been a Christianity. That's neither here nor there. Holidays have different meanings for me than Christians. That's fine too. As long as neither demands that we give up one set of holidays and practices for another backed by the force or law, it works. Let people choose for themselves and live their lives as they see fit.

Meanwhile, enjoy winter as we move towards Yuletide. class="ghoster">
