NeoNotes — Earth Day

This was originally published at Technopagan Yearnings last year.

Tomorrow is the customary Earth Day.

I prefer the original Earth Day introduced on the vernal equinox in 1970. I combine it with my version of Arbor Day when I celebrate.

The original Earth Day was about celebrating the Earth and peace.

The second Earth Day was about compelling behavior and teaching environmentalism.

In short, the movement was hijacked by a politician.

And we’ve been pretending that is a Good Thing™ ever since.

So without the social justice hullabaloo, without shaming and controlling other people, let’s treat Earth Day as how it started. Celebrate the Earth and peace. Forget the environmentalism. Forget the social justice. Forget the politics.

It’s about the Earth, the one thing we share. It’s about peace, the one thing we should share. Hard to go wrong with either of those. class="ghoster">

A few days ago on the Wild Hunt site, I wrote this.

Ecology is about understanding how living systems interact and the tradeoffs needed for positive change. It's an actual science. It can measure. It can predict.

Like most isms, environmentalism is about control. Usually that control involves force even if it's "for the greater good." If you have to back your beliefs with force, you're doing it wrong.

As a rule, I consider politics inappropriate for nearly ANY holiday. Holidays are meant to celebrate. class="ghoster">
