from crux № 5 - making mistakes

I do agree that they might be foolish (obviously it depends on who is involved), but I also say that freedom means making mistakes and learning to deal with the consequences.

Take away that choice and you deprive that person.

As long as no one invokes government to force the issue one way or another, that is exactly as it should be.

Freedom means that people must be allowed to make their own mistakes. The smart ones learn and try again, the not-smart ones isolate themselves from the society that they need.

We don't know what will be most effective in ten years. We do know what works reasonably well now. Our job as a society is not to enforce morality, but to let all these choices work out or not.

Let them prove themselves or clean up their own mess.

If people can make their own mistakes and have to deal with the consequences, most find a way that works.

Our problem is that we excuse people from the consequences.

Freedom and responsibility usually works.
I started keeping my crux files because I noticed I kept getting into the same discussions in comment threads on other people’s web sites. After a while it just made sense for me to organize my thoughts by topic. These are snippets. It’s not in any particular order, it’s just discussions I have again and again.
